Fire hoses

A fire hose  is an item of first aid equipment used to fight incipient fires until the fire service arrives. They are designed to contain incipient fires and must only be used by trained personnel. They are installed in establishments that are open to the public, in numerous industrial establishments and in the logistics sector to address the problem of the risk of fire.

Composition of a fire hose

  • A water supply shut-off valve
  • Reel with central feed
  • An elementary semi-rigid hose (that does not lie flat, so that it can be used without fully unwinding the hose) measuring 20 m or 30 m in length.
  • A dispenser tap

First aid hoses are available in different diameters and lengths, depending on the risk of fire.

How is a fire hose supplied with water?

Fire hoses are supplied from the mains water supply or from a specific source of water.

The sources of water supply, irrespective of their type, must be capable of supplying a number of first aid hoses stipulated in the reference texts simultaneously for 20 minutes, with a minimum of two and a maximum of four fire hoses.

The minimum flow rate is specified in the standard NF S 61-201 or by the APSAD rule R5.

Where should they be installed in a building?

Fire hoses must be positioned close to sensitive areas, preferably close to the points of access and such that their jets cover the entire surface area of the building. In commercial establishments open to the public measuring more than

3,000 m², the protection offered by fire hoses complements the installation of a sprinkler-type automatic extinction system.

We install and maintain fire hoses in accordance with the applicable certification and standards: APSAD, R5 and NFS 62-201 (certification number 035/02/J5.F5).

Preventive maintenance of fire hoses

Your system of first aid hoses must be regularly inspected and maintained to make sure that it is permanently operational.

Quarterly inspections

APSAD-certified personnel must carry our inspections to check the working order of the valves, all moving parts with the hose full of water, all the components, the pressure gauge readings, the expiry date of the emulsifier, etc.

Annual maintenance

An inspection to make sure that the installation is compliant and in good working order (the water source, compressor, network of water pipes, the first aid hoses and hydraulic measurements (pressure / flow rate / range)).

Five-year maintenance

In addition to the checks made in the annual inspection, the following operations must also be performed: drain and clean the water source, test the first aid hose pipes (DN33-7 bar, DN25-12 bar and DN19-12 bar) and replace the seals on all the fire hoses.

10-year maintenance

In addition to the checks made in the annual and five-year inspections, the interior of the piping must be checked for corrosion by removing a number of test sections. The piping must also be rinsed and all the seals must be replaced on every fire hoses.
